Dryer Drum Not Turning? Check These 4 Things Before You Call for Service
Updated: Aug 31
If the dryer powers on or you can hear it trying to run but the drum stays still, the most common mechanical possibilities are a broken or slipped drive belt, a seized drum or support component, or a drive-motor problem. First, stop the dryer and make sure there is no burning smell, smoke, sparking, or abnormal heat. Then confirm the door is fully closed and any control lock is off.
With the dryer OFF and empty, you can gently try to rotate the drum by hand without removing any panels. Whirlpool and Maytag both use this as a basic symptom check: a drum that is unusually hard to move can point to a seized mechanical problem, while a drum that turns but will not tumble under power can still involve the belt, motor, or controls. Do not open the cabinet to inspect those parts yourself.

Quick answer: what to do first
Stop the cycle and unload the dryer. Do not keep running repeated test cycles with a stationary drum.
Confirm the door is fully latched, the correct cycle was actually started, and Child Lock or Control Lock is not preventing operation.
With the dryer off and empty, gently rotate the drum by hand. If it is very difficult to move, stop there and arrange service.
If the controls count down or the motor can be heard but the drum still does not turn, treat the belt, drive system, rollers, or motor as technician-level possibilities.
What the symptoms can tell you
The motor seems to run, but the drum does not move
Maytag and Whirlpool both identify a worn or broken drive belt as a common reason a dryer motor may run while the drum does not rotate. A drive belt sits inside the cabinet, so confirming or replacing it requires disassembly. That is beyond the homeowner-safe checks in this guide.
The drum is unusually hard to turn by hand
Manufacturer guidance notes that an unusually difficult-to-turn drum can indicate a seized drum or support problem. Rollers and related drive parts can also cause noise or resistance. Do not force the drum and do not remove panels to find the jam; schedule appliance service.
The controls turn on, but the cycle does not really start
Before assuming a mechanical failure, confirm that the door is closed, the Start button was held as required by the model, and a control-lock feature is not active. Samsung specifically notes that Child Lock or a door condition can prevent a cycle from starting. If the timer begins counting down but the drum still does not rotate, service is usually the next step.
The dryer hums, squeals, stops, or smells hot
Abnormal humming, squealing, repeated stopping, or a hot or burning smell can point to a drive or motor problem and should not be investigated by repeated operation. Stop using the appliance. If there is smoke, sparking, melting odor, or intense heat, keep clear and disconnect power only if that can be done safely; otherwise leave it off and contact qualified service or emergency help as appropriate.
Safe homeowner checks vs. professional-only work
Safe: verify the door, cycle and lock setting; unload the dryer; observe whether the timer counts down; gently rotate an empty drum by hand while the dryer is off.
Professional-only: opening the cabinet; replacing the belt, motor, rollers, idler, control board or internal wiring; live-voltage testing; moving or disconnecting a gas dryer when that could disturb the gas connection.
A simple decision path
Danger signs such as smoke, sparking, burning odor or intense heat: stop use immediately and arrange qualified help.
No danger signs: verify the door, cycle and lock setting.
Dryer off and empty: gently check whether the drum rotates without unusual resistance.
Drum still will not tumble during a real cycle: stop testing and schedule service for the belt, drive system, rollers, motor or controls.
