Dryer Won't Start: What to Check First

If your dryer won't start, first figure out whether it has no power at all or the controls light up but the drum will not begin turning. That split points you toward different safe checks. Start with the plug and household circuit, the door, Control Lock, the Start button, and the selected cycle. Do not remove panels, open the power connection area, test live voltage, or bypass a door switch.

First: Is the Dryer Completely Dead?

If the display, indicator lights, and interior light (if your model has one) are all off, start outside the appliance. Make sure the plug is fully seated and look for obvious cord or outlet damage without touching anything scorched, loose, or hot. Then check the household breaker or fuse panel.

Electric dryers commonly use a 240-volt supply with a double-pole breaker or two fuses, so a power problem may not look the same as it does on a standard 120-volt appliance. Gas dryers also need household electricity to start. If a breaker trips again after you reset it once, or if you see heat damage at the plug or outlet, stop using the dryer and call a qualified electrician or appliance technician.

If the Dryer Has Power but Will Not Start

Close the door firmly and make sure no clothing is caught between the door and cabinet. Many dryers will not run unless the door switch or latch confirms that the door is closed. Never tape, hold, or bypass a door switch to force the dryer to operate.

Check whether Control Lock or Child Lock is active. The button name and unlock procedure vary by model, so use the owner’s manual or the manufacturer’s support page for your exact dryer.

Press the Start control the way your model requires. Some dryers need a deliberate press-and-hold rather than a quick tap. Whirlpool notes that certain models may require the Start button to be held for a few seconds. Do not assume the same timing applies to every brand or model.

Confirm that you selected an actual drying cycle. A canceled cycle, a control setting that has not been confirmed, or a model-specific option can leave the dryer powered on without beginning a normal tumble cycle.

If the control panel shows an error code, flashing indicator, or lock symbol, look up that exact message in the manual or official support information for your model. Error meanings and reset procedures are not universal.

What the Symptom Can Tell You

A completely dark dryer points first toward the household power supply, outlet, cord, or an internal power fault. A dryer with normal lights that does nothing when Start is pressed points more toward the door/latch, a lock setting, the Start input, the selected cycle, or an internal control fault.

If the dryer clicks or hums but the drum does not begin turning, avoid repeated start attempts. A jammed drum, motor problem, belt-related fault, or other internal issue may need service. Those checks require access inside the appliance and are not homeowner-safe troubleshooting steps for this guide.

When to Stop Using the Dryer

Stop and disconnect power if it is safe to do so when you notice a burning smell, sparks, a melted or discolored plug or outlet, a damaged cord, unusual heat at the receptacle, or a breaker that repeatedly trips. Do not continue testing a dryer with signs of an electrical fault.

Call an electrician when the evidence points to the household circuit, receptacle, or breaker. Call a qualified appliance technician when the dryer has normal power but the safe external checks above do not restore operation.
