Washing Machine Won't Spin: What to Check First

If a washer reaches the end of a cycle and the clothes are still dripping, don't jump straight to a failed motor. Start with what happened just before the spin: was there water left in the drum, did one heavy item bunch up on one side, or did the machine stop before it picked up speed?

The checks below are worth doing before you book a repair. None of them requires removing panels or bypassing safety switches. When a step depends on your model—such as a pump filter, reset procedure, or control setting—use the owner's manual for that machine.

First, look for standing water

If the washer is holding water, check for a drainage problem before focusing on the spin system. Many washers will not begin a normal high-speed spin until enough water has been pumped out. If the drum is mostly empty but the clothes are still very wet, the problem is more likely to involve cycle settings, load balance, leveling, or a door or lid condition.

  • Water remains in the washer: check the accessible drain path first.

  • No standing water but clothes are soaked: check spin settings and load balance.

  • The washer pauses between stages: some pauses between wash, drain, and spin are normal on certain models.

1. Check the cycle and spin-speed setting

Delicate, hand-wash, low-spin, and no-spin settings intentionally remove less water from clothing. If the wrong cycle was selected, the washer may be working normally even though the load feels unusually wet. If your machine provides a Drain & Spin or Spin Only option, follow the manual to select it and see whether the washer completes the cycle.

2. Redistribute an unbalanced or overloaded load

A heavy blanket, bath mat, or other absorbent item can collect on one side of the drum. An overloaded washer can cause a similar imbalance. Many machines respond by slowing the spin, extending the cycle, trying repeatedly to rebalance the load, or stopping the spin.

  1. Pause the cycle and wait for the washer to unlock safely.

  2. Spread the clothing evenly around the drum or basket.

  3. If the machine is tightly packed, remove some items.

  4. For one bulky item, follow your owner's manual for balancing bulky loads before trying the spin again.

3. Make sure the washer is level and stable

A washer that rocks or sits unevenly can have trouble balancing the load at high speed. If you notice strong vibration or repeated balancing attempts, gently check whether the appliance rocks at the corners. Use the leveling instructions for your model rather than guessing at the adjustment procedure.

4. Check the door or lid

Washers use safety interlocks to prevent high-speed spinning when the door or lid is open. Make sure it is fully closed and that no clothing is trapped in the opening. Some front-load models may also require the detergent dispenser drawer to be fully closed. If the washer shows a latch-related error code, check the manual for that exact model.

5. If water remains, inspect only the accessible drain path

A kinked or blocked drain hose can prevent the washer from emptying properly, which can also prevent a normal spin. Visually check the exposed drain hose for sharp bends or crushing. If your owner's manual identifies a user-accessible pump filter, follow the manual's cleaning procedure and disconnect power before opening that filter area.

Do not remove washer panels, reach into internal pumps, or bypass safety switches as part of basic troubleshooting. If a component is not designed for user access, leave that work to a qualified technician.

6. Consider excess detergent or oversudsing

Too much detergent can create excessive suds, especially in high-efficiency machines. Manufacturer guidance notes that oversudsing can interfere with draining and reduce spin performance. Use the detergent type and amount recommended for your washer and load size.

7. Consider a power interruption or incomplete cycle

A brief outage, tripped breaker, or interrupted cycle can stop a washer before it reaches full spin speed. If the machine has power and there is no safety issue, use the manufacturer-approved Spin or Drain & Spin cycle. Reset procedures vary by model, so do not assume a specific unplugging time is a universal reset method.

Use the symptom to narrow it down

  • Washer drains but will not spin: focus first on balance, spin settings, leveling, and door or lid conditions.

  • Washer will not drain and will not spin: a drainage problem may be preventing the spin cycle from starting.

  • Only bulky loads fail to spin: load distribution or capacity is a strong suspect.

  • Washer shakes violently during spin: stop the cycle and correct load balance or leveling before continuing.

  • Grinding, scraping, or repeated harsh mechanical noises: stop using the washer and arrange service rather than continuing to test it.

When to call a technician

Schedule service if these basic checks do not restore normal spinning, or if the washer shows a persistent latch, motor, drive, or pump error that the owner's manual directs to service. Stop using the appliance promptly if you notice a burning smell, smoke, sparking, water reaching electrical parts, severe grinding, or repeated violent movement.

Before you book a repair

  • Confirm the selected cycle includes a normal spin.

  • Redistribute the load and remove excess items.

  • Check whether the washer is level and stable.

  • Make sure the door, lid, and any required dispenser drawer are fully closed.

  • Look for standing water and visible drain-hose kinks.

  • Note any error code, unusual noise, or exact point where the cycle stops.
